India ended their 2026 Asian Games campaign with a total of 85 medals, including 21 gold in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan on Saturday. A whopping nine-medal haul on the final day, including five gold medals propelled India to a fourth-place finish in the medal table, edging Uzbekistan on the silver medal count. The 85-medal finish is now India’s second-highest medal tally at an Asian Games, just behind the 106 the country won at the delayed 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China last edition. Here, we take a look at how each sport contributed to India’s medal . Athletics Athletics emerged as the biggest contributor to India’s medal tally, like always, at the 2026 Asian Games. Track and field athletes from the country added 24 medals, including a gold, nine silver, and 14 bronze medals. The women’s 4x400m quartet of Kiran Pahal, MR Poovamma, Prachi Chaudhary, and Vithya Ramraj clinched the lone gold medal even as the likes of men’s 4x400m team, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, Parul Chaudhary, and Avinash Sable failed to defend their respective titles from Hangzhou. Shooting Shooting remained one of the biggest contributors to India’s medal tally in Aichi-Nagoya. While eyebrows were rightly raised, thanks to a dip in performances in rifle and pistol events, the shotgun events led . India finished their shooting campaign with 15 medals, including three gold, eight silver, and four bronze. Neeru Dhanda in women’s trap, Neeru-Kynan Chenai in mixed trap, and Suruchi Phogat-Kamlajeet in mixed 10m air pistol provided the gold medals. The tally paled, however, when compared to 22 medals, including seven gold in Hangzhou. Archery The archers emerged as India’s source of happiness late in the 2026 Asian Games, aiding India’s last-minute dash to a fourth-place finish in the medal tally. While India swept the gold medals in compound team events, recurve archers led – women’s team and women’s individual events. India ended their archery campaign with five gold, two silver, and two bronze medals to top the sport’s medal tally. Boxing Indian boxers registered their best campaign in years at the Asian Games, winning a total of six medals in Aichi-Nagoya. Pugilists from the country returned with three gold medals and three bronze medals apiece to lead the sport’s medal tally at the 2026 Asian Games.The three gold medals came via Lovlina Borgohain, Parveen Hooda, and Ankush Panghal on the penultimate day of the competition.WrestlingLed , Indian wrestlers bagged a total of six medals at the 2026 Asian Games. India were the pre-tournament favourites in both kabaddi and cricket events and they cruised to the titles.There were no doubts about the men’s hockey team defending their title either and they did so successfully for the first time.It was the women’s hockey team, however, which stood out 2024 Paris Olympics silver medallists China 1-0 in the final.Both the men’s and women’s hockey teams also secured their place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics with their gold medal run.Squash Squash added five medals to India’s tally, but fell short of the two gold medals India had won at the previous edition in Hangzhou. Ananat Singh and Abhay Singh won a silver medal apiece in the women’s and men’s singles events respectively, while the Indian women’s and men’s team bagged a bronze. The mixed doubles pair of Joshna Chinappa-Velavan Senthilkumar also finished third on the podium. Sailing Sailing gave India three medals at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. The men’s 49er duo of Prince Noble and Manu Francis won a silver, while the women’s 49er FX pair of Harshita Tomar and Shital Verma clinched a bronze. Olympian Nethra Kumanan, competing in her fourth Asian Games, also finally tasted the podium with a bronze medal finish in women’s dinghy. Golf India won its first gold medal in golf in 24 years as Pranavi Urs took the title in women’s individual strokeplay , holding off former world No 1 from China. Pranavi’s exploits combined with a last-day fightback from Aditi Ashok also helped India to their first-ever women’s team medal – a silver – in golf. Weightlifting, WushuMirabai Chanu bagged her first Asian Games medal in Aichi-Nagoya. Competing in women’s 49kg, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics medallist returned with a silver medal. It remained India’s only medal in weightlifting at the 2026 Asian Games.Meanwhile in Wushu, Naorem Roshibina Devi completed a hat-trick of medals, winning her second consecutive silver medal. Kurash, MMA, Badminton, Rowing, Soft Tennis, Sepak Takraw, Table TennisIndia also bagged a bronze medal apiece in sports like kurash, MMA, badminton, soft tennis, sepak takraw, table tennis and rowingWhile Pincky Balhara returned to the Asian Games podium with a bronze medal in kurash, Suchika Tariyal bagged a medal on MMA’s debut for India with a controversial finish to her semi-final bout. Badminton and rowing saw performances dip when compared to the 2022 Asian Games. While the men’s team bronze was the only medal in badminton, Satnam Singh and Salman Khan in men’s pair rowing ensured that India’s medal streak in rowing which dates back to 1990 continues. In table tennis, Manush Shah and Diya Chitale bagged a bronze medal in mixed doubles.In sepak takraw, India bagged a first-ever men's quadrant medal, while Dev Meena also finished on the podium in soft tennis in what was India's first-ever medal in the sport.
